Did you know seaweed is the ideal food to stop cows from farting so much?? ( Or in more technical terms, stops them releasing so much methane into the atmosphere.)
This is important because high levels of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, in the atmosphere play a large part in our rising temperatures. Interestingly seaweed can help in reducing both of these gases.
How does it do it? Like all plants, when seaweed grows, it uses photosynthesises -which takes carbon out of the air and puts oxygen back. What is different about seaweed is that it takes more carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere than other plants plus keeps hold of it, therefore reducing carbon dioxide levels in the air.
When feeding cows dried seaweed, they release 90% less methane (or, in other words, fart less) than when eating alternative foods. Reducing methane levels in the air is essential as high levels contribute to rising temperatures.
Reasons to be hopeful:
Cows farting less, therefore releasing less methane, coupled with seaweeds ability to store carbon dioxide all help to reduce levels of these gases in the atmosphere.
In addition, using seaweed for animal food releases the land needed to grow other crops.
Also dried seaweed is a highly nutritious food for humans.
Plus seaweed is used to make bioplastics and medications, including materials for wound care.
Lastly, we can make edible and bio-degradable food packaging from seaweed - what’s not to like about that!!
