✨ Why was this event important?
The opening speech at the event was given by Ambassador André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, the President of COP30. (COP30 is the huge climate conference happening in Brazil in 2025!)
He had bought together leading economists (money experts) to create an exciting report about: 👉 How countries can work together to tackle the climate change in fairer and smarter ways.
Everyone at the event was talking about this new report with a big idea. The report is called: A Green and Just Planet: A Framework for Governing Industrial and Financial Policy for a 1.5ºC World.
💡 What’s different about this report?
Normally, when people talk about climate action and money, the story goes like this:
“Governments should make it easier for big companies to invest in green projects.”
But this report says something braver:
🌱 Real power comes when governments, central banks, and industries work together to make bold, fair choices.
And if we act in this way, there’s already enough money in the world to make the changes we need. That means climate solutions could not only faster, but also fairer for everyone.
🌱 Reasons to be hopeful
1. New leadership
Leaders like Ambassador Corrêa do Lago are opening the door to fresh ideas. Instead of just helping companies, they’re calling for teamwork between countries, banks, and communities to make real change possible.
2. Bright thinkers
He is asking some of the world’s leading money experts to reimagine how climate action and the economy can work together. These experts are:
Mariana Mazzucato — Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London and founding director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at UCL, Co-chair of the report’s Group of Experts
Amir Lebdioui — Associate Professor of the Political Economy of Development at the University of Oxford’s Department of International Development. Group of Experts member
Ulrich Volz — Professor of Economics & Director of the Centre for Sustainable Finance at SOAS, Group of Experts member
✨ For us at Reasons to Be Hopeful, this report and Ambassador Corrêa asking leading money experts to work with him — show the first seeds of people in power beginning to create new ways of working that are fairer for both people and the planet.
